Hi Schily, nice to see you here (I recently joined your cdrecord mail list and sent some messages).
It may take only 5 minutes to install the cdrtools, but if you're not used to extracting programs from source, then reading the 'readme's' and figuring all of that out takes a lot more than 5 minutes.
Then there's the chore of removing the files like wodim and cdda2wav and readcd and icedax and following links in /usr/bin and figuring out how to make links when you've never done that before -- that takes more than 5 minutes too. I have a text file where I noted most of the changes I made, in Fedora 12 there are some files in /usr/bin that are linked to files in /etc/alternatives and /etc/alternatives is nothing but links to (guess where?) /usr/bin! Oh yeah, and also make sure you add exclude=wodim, etc. to your yum.conf file if you don't want all that hard work to be overwritten during an update. And let's not forget trying to figure out about setting a suid sticky bit for cdrecord.
And now I'm on Fedora 13 (alpha) and getting DVD errors again (program memory area update failure) on v074a of cdrtools after I went to 4 different places before I found some Verbatim DVD's. So I think Fedora does have some issues with DVD's. I'm going to try again on CentOS in a bit. Since I had Verbatim dvd's I wanted to see what Fedora would do.
Not trying to steal the thread, just venting a bit that it's not quite as easy as your option 1 or 2, though it is indeed an education -- though it would be very nice to have the cdrtools available in the repo's.
