Sun Java

Hello,
from the links I have read it seems like you have to manually download the lastest sun java from sun.com and then excute some commands to get firefox to use sun java rather than openjdk.

It seems stupid having to update sun java manually. so is there a repo for it so i can update sun java with yum like all other programs?

thanks in advance

Sun Java is NOT Open Source so it cannot be packages in a repo, which means hit has to be manually downloaded an installed. if you want Sun Java to fully open source complain to Oracle

an where is Debain actually Based? Germany laws? US laws are different Fedora or any other redhat based OS isnt allowed to package Sun Java,

you just said Debain has it in there non-free repo yeah? which means its NOT FREE software, im not sure where rpmfusion.org is based , there are laws in each country

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Forbid...s#Sun.27s_Java

i think Mandriva can Package Java as there in France, which again has different laws

---------- Post added at 09:58 AM CST ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 AM CST ----------

Based on: Independent - Debain
Origin: Global

so the laws are gonna be different wherever that Debain based Project is, ( someone correct me if im wrong )

where i said Sun Java is Not Free,, it is but as you may read in that link it still has a cloud hanging over it which stops Redhat packaging it

What about freebsd?
origin USA and sun java is in the ports collection.
link
I dont see why redhat cant get a license from Sun.

package management is one of the strong points of Redhat based distros and not being able to use it for all programs seems stupid.

Once you select sun java to install in ubuntu or debian you have to then accept the license agreement for it. I dont see why fedora cant do the same thing.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Software_Patents

The JRE licencse is "Sun Microsystems Binary Code License (BCL)" which falls outside of the acceptable range for the Fedora Project policy - a policy which will not change, so no point in whinging or arguing about that.

It's an extra step, but no big deal.
