In Applications-->System Tools-->Configuration Editor, go to:
apps-->nautilus-->desktop and uncheck trash_icon_visible.
If you don't have gconf-editor installed yum install gconf-editor (It's not there by default in F12)

Right clicking on the icon should give you the "Remove from panel" option.
Alternativly, can use gconf-editor and goto apps>nautilus>desktop. There you'll see checkboxes for each of the icons.
Or, you can kill the trash applet.

I run KDE, and do not really like the "desktop" feature, so here is what I do. I remove it. That makes for a clean desktop. then I add a trashcan widgit to my taskbar, and when I need "Desktop," I just open "Home" which I also have an icon for in my taskbar, and select "desktop" from there.

There's nothing like Configuration Editor in my Apps->SystemTools section. Do I need to install some package for it to show up there?
Thanks.

yum install gconf-editor - it should show up in the menu as soon as it's installed.
