support for gd graphics in php

Hi Folks

I find myself in need of the gd graphics library from php
this page

http://us.php.net/manual/en/image.installation.php

seems to indicate I need to recompile php with a switch to enable it
is this so?
I've used it in the past, seems like it was just enabled by default
