Post FC11 Samba Installation Problem

New to Fedora, but not new to Linux. My problem is this:

I have installed FC 11 on a toshiba laptop.- Celeron 530@1.72 G
HZ The installation seemed to proceed with out problems. However, for some strange reason, the Samba packages of
Windbind, Client, and Common were installed, but the Samba package for the corresponding version (3.3.2-0.33) was not. This is is an assumption based upon the Yum update log which shows that all of the afore mentioned packaged were updated except for the Samba package - which I assume was never installed. What would be the best approach for correcting this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Wooftwo

Welcome to the forum.

The usual approach, assuming you have an internet connection, would be to run:

Code:
yum install samba system-config-samba
from a root command line.

If you are unused to Fedora, be aware that when you start the samba service (smb) you also need to start the nmb service as a separate entity.

Smile Samba now up to date

Thanks for the help. The yum command worked, and downloaded the latest samba package. I tried to start smb using the service start comand, and got the message that it was not a recognized service. The smb script was located in the /etc/init.d directory. I assume that I still have some work to do. But anyway thanks

Hello Wooftwo

I'd always use the Service Manager from the Administration menu for that task as the command you were using would only start the service until you rebooted.

It almost sounds though as if you had the command the wrong way round.

Code:
service start smb
will fail with that error message because 'start is not a service.

Code:
service smb start
should work, with the above provisos though.

Thanks for the reply Bob. It was a OPERATOR ERROR from the gitgo. I may have to fire my administrator or least demote him(myself). All the daemons are up and running. I now have to find how to network shares with a Windows 7 computer
