You need the complete package name (from rpm -qa)
You can use --nodeps to erase just festival but that would leave broken deps gnome-speech, festvox-slt-arctic-hts (or whatever you get)

$ rpm -qa festival
festival-1.96-16.fc12.i686
[darwinhwebb@Ruthie-07 ~]$ rpm -e festival-1.96-16.fc12.i686 --test
error: Failed dependencies:
festival >= 1.96-0.11 is needed by (installed) gnome-speech-0.4.25-3.fc12.i686
festival is needed by (installed) festvox-slt-arctic-hts-0.20061229-16.fc12.noarch

[darwinhwebb@Ruthie-07 ~]$ rpm -e festival-1.96-16.fc12.i686 --nodeps --test
