thinkpad volume buttons

Has anyone been able to get the thinkpad volume buttons to work in F11? They worked in F9 but now they have no effect on the speaker volume, only on the system bell.
How can I get the volume buttons to change the speaker volume? I installed tpb but that didn't help.

I have not had a problem on either my t23 or t400. Thinkwiki.org has configuration help. What model do you have and how did you get from F9 to F11? Upgrade or fresh install?

I did a fresh install. But the following command enabled the buttons:
echo 0xffffffff > /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

Does your mute key work properly on your T400, also on Fedora 11 do you get the whole range of volume? If I go below 60% of volume, it fades to nothing. Thanks.

The mute button mutes the sound for me. To un-mute press one of the volume buttons, that works for me. My volume fades to nothing at 60% just as you describe. I did not have to echo to proc as described above. The sound worked fine out of the box, including using the mike with skype.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was just wandering if this was seen by all T400 users, and it appears it might be. Sound does work out of the box but there's a few things like as I describe the 60% thing and my hardware mute key not registering the mute in software.

So in what situations does the mute key work? I don't use it often and have tested it when listening to a music stream initiated through firefox and it worked.

When you press the mute key it'll mute the volume until you press say volume up. However if you look at the notification space, the volume applet doesn't show it's been muted. So I guess that it's a hardware mute key, just cuts everything off. The two should be in sync, so when you mute with the key it'll show muted in the volume applet, and if you wanted to unmute in software then it'd unmute in hardware too.
