How to remap keys. Saitek command pad.

I have a Saitek keyboard, been using it for about 8 years and still like it. It has a 9 button command pad attached. The buttons numbered 1-9 work, although they do things like right click or other odd functions. How can I remap them to say, open applications I use frequently.

There are two ways.

1. Run gconf-editor. This may be available in the menu (System tools - Configuration editor), or you may need to get it from the repository. Go to Apps - Metacity. There you can assign up to 10 keys (run_command_1 etc in global_keybindings) to commands (command_1 etc in keybinding_commands).

2. Get a copy of xbindkeys and use that. You can define any key in that by using its scancode (e.g. c:117), found with xev.
