yum removes packages which are not in the remove list

On a Fedora 11 Basic install, after:
Code:
#yum groupremove Arabic\ Support Armenian\ Support Assamese\ Support Bengali\ Support
#yum groupremove Bhutanese\ Support Dial-up\ Networking\ Support Ethiopic\ Support Georgian\ Support
group Base is no longer listed as installed. Network Manager is certainly not there anymore, interfaces are down.
I repeated this mistake twice, so this is it. Is Fedora 11 working console mode only with international languages support?
I also remember I've seen other groups missing. Electronic Lab is now installed, it wasn't before.

I don't follow:
Quote:
#yum groupremove Bhutanese\ Support Dial-up\ Networking\ Support Ethiopic\ Support Georgian\ Support
Yet you seem surprised and dismayed that "Network Manager is certainly not there anymore, interfaces are down." What did you expect after running such commands ???

What exactly are you trying to accomplish here - what is your goal ?

Thanks for your answers.

Hlingler: I am trying to free up some disk space, but it seems that those groups are not very large. I am also trying to free the system from not needed packages: since I work in console only, I believe I do not need those language support groups. Please let me know what is wrong with that command, that would help me. I also suspected Dial-up Networking Support, also because yum was around it when it happened, but NetworkManager is part of Base, which was removed. Why did that happen?

Nokia: Here are the last lines from /var/log/yum.log. Thank you for your reply:

OK. It doesn't look like you removed many important things. We have yet to understand the title of the thread and the reason you posted.

Oh no, I recovered. The problem is that I tried to remove some groups which I did not expect to be there in a Basic install, like Arabic Support, and I was left without Base group, which also meant no Internet connection. I thought that groups are rather independent, and especially Base should live without Arabic Support, when X Window is not installed. I never had problems with yum, but this outcome is confusing for me. Maybe you can give a hint about what happened and if I should consider removing such groups. Why are they there?

If you want a text-only (CLI) installation, and don't need a GUI/desktop, then removing the X11 group would free up a lot of HDD space.

If you remove only ONE package that is part of a group's "Required" list, then that group becomes "not installed", even though all other packages than the one that you removed are still installed.

Thanks. So groups overlap? That would explain Base not complete after Dial-up removed. Or maybe yum removed all Dial-up plus packages dependent of it. I expected yum to preserve all Base and remove only what was possible from Dial-up.

Yes, in some cases, with some packages.

Yes: packages dependent upon those in the removed group would also have to be removed.

YUM is not that smart: it did what you commanded, without question. Period.

Hlingler: Thanks again, the manual is pretty clear on this, but I was sure it's the other way, and the final outcome was unexpected.

X Window System is not installed. There is no X11 group. There are these packages, but I better let them installed, who knows what could happen if I remove them.

ConsoleKit-x11.i586
dbus-x11.i586
libX11.i586
qt-x11.i586
xorg-x11-filesystem.noarch
xorg-x11-font-utils.i586
xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi.noarch
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-15-100dpi.noarch
xorg-x11-fonts-Type1.noarch
xorg-x11-fonts-misc.noarch
xorg-x11-server-utils.i586
xorg-x11-xauth.i586
xorg-x11-xinit.i586

I'll try to change the title of the thread into something relevant, but I am not sure that I can do that.

No, you cannot. Send me a PM with the new title that you would like, and I will be happy to change it.

P.S. I can understand your confusion and frustration to some degree: many of the package dependencies do NOT make sense on first glance (or second, or third...), and trying to purge unwanted/unnecessary packages/groups can be a real chore.

P.P.S. Thread title changed to "yum removes packages which are not in the remove list" as per OP request.

It is important that yum is working well.

It seems that visualizing the installed rpm's dependency graph is an open problem.

Thanks again.

Code:
yum remove sendmail
has removed rpm and yum. How is this possible? Moreover, I have a "minimal" list of packages for Fedora 11, and it does contain yum, but it does not contain sendmail. It results that yum should have not removed yum and rpm as a result of this command, and therefore yum has a bug that makes it remove more packages than necessary. I will try to reproduce the "minimal" list of packages. If I succeed, than the proof is complete.
