    Fedora 11 with repo Mythtv

    Hello!

I have a Mythtv backend with very recent fixes from the .21 branch.

I installed the Mythtv frontend packages from the repros. It found my backend with the Upnp function and accepted my pin code. So long everything seems to be working perfectly. But as soon as it attempts to start nothing happens. No error message nothing.

I restarted the system and tried again, this time the setup screen was gone (as it should be after it had been configured) but nothing happens.

I looked for any logs in /var/logs but could not find any related to mythfrontend.

Hi Nyberg. Welcome to Fedora Forum. It's more likely that no one has a correct answer for you or that folks who may have some sort of answer just haven't seen this thread.

I know nothing about MythTV. Maybe you could open two terminals and in one type sudo tail -f /var/log/messages. In the other terminal run mythtv. If there are errors there may be something showing in the first terminal. You should see new error messages appear in that terminal. If MythTV depends on httpd you can also look at /etc/httpd/logs. There are 2 or 3 log files there that may provide some insight. Hope to have provided some sort of help for you.

As an afterthought, you can use tail on any of the log files to watch them "live".

Saw the problem. Someone has been compiling the package using pulse audio, it needs to be disabled.

2009-06-12 20:19:54.635 ERROR: ***Pulse Audio is running!!!!***
2009-06-12 20:19:54.635 ERROR: But MythTV has not been compiled with Pulse Audio disabling support. EXITING!

    Can this be fixed?

Same problem. Starting mythtv-frontend from terminal reveals the same:

2009-06-12 21:45:01.992 ERROR: ***Pulse Audio is running!!!!***
2009-06-12 21:45:01.993 ERROR: But MythTV has not been compiled with Pulse Audio disabling support. EXITING!

I believe Pulse Audio is now the default sound server in Fedora - no?
If so, this message would seem to indicate that the latest mythtv-frontend packages need to be compiled with Pulse Audio support.
    Output from MythFrontend
Please include all output in bug reports.
    MythTV Version : 0.21-19.fc11
    MythTV Branch : tags/release-0-21

    Installed from rpm-fusion.

Is there an easy way for one to switch back to ALSA? Or do we have to compile myth with Pulse support?

    Any advice would be appreciated,

    Cheers.

    Hrrrm,

After posting I realized I usually install myth from atrpms. So on a hunch I removed the rpmfusion version and installed the atrpms version. But to no avail. Slightly different version but exactly the same problem described above:

Please include all output in bug reports.
    MythTV Version : 20600M
    MythTV Branch : branches/release-0-21-fixes
    Library API : 0.21.20080304-1

    *sigh*

This problem has been seen around the net, I think pulseaudio is to slow for mythtv so it's not using it. But this means that when compiling mythtv it needs to be compiled with a nopulse flag or something like it. This problem has been seen in other distros as well and requires the package handler to do some effort.

Lightbulb Fedora 11 PulseAudio and MythTV "Fix"

    Hi

I've just installed MythTV on Fedora 11 and had the same issue, here's my temporary workaround.

    This command worked for me:

    Code:
    pactl exit
Then run MythTV as usual (e.g. with the command mythfrontend) in a terminal window or via the menu. Running in a terminal window means you get to see error messages so might be handy if it doesn't work in future!

I know nothing about PulseAudio (I tend to use Centos on server machines) but it looks like pactl controls it...

Hope this helps enjoy your TV!

Thanks for the workaround oaf. That at least allows sound for watching myth.

    Couple of things of note:
    - pactl exit, pulseaudio -k, killall pulseaudio, all work for shutting it down
    - pasuspender -- mythtv-frontend does NOT work, still complains about PA running.
    - Volume applet on panel no longer controls volume, even after restarting PA. can't figure out how to get the applet working again after restarting PA
    - Any attempt to change the volume from within Myth Frontend will kickstart PA and audio becomes choppy in Myth with Audio buffer overflows (or something like that).

Hopefully atrpms/rpmfusion provide a compiled version of myth with PA support.

    Thanks again.

All is right with the world again!! Props to the folks at atrpms, I just installed a mythtv update that provides a missing pulse audio library dependency. I now have sound in myth without having to kill PA.

    Good news

    Hi

Glad my workaround helped - even happier that new RPMs are available with Pulse support and it isn't needed I just need to get my remote control running now and I'll be all set!

    Cheers

    Oaf

This problem is not limited to fedora 11. It also occurs in fedora 10. This temporary workaround worked for me as well.

After pulling my hair out for a day I finally got Myth working with Pulse under F12 by running

    mythavtest

oaf with pulse built into the RPMS what do you set your audio device to? Does it show up automatically in the selection?
