Problems (minor) with upgrade to 2.6 kernel

After I upgraded using arjanv's 2.6 rpm's everything seems sweet.

I had a problem with my usb mouse not working, but solved that quickly, no threads or discussions seem to mention the ohci usb driver, I had to change my /etc/modprobe.conf to include the line

alias usb-controller ohci-hcd

ehci and uhci are always used in examples, so if your haveing troubles with usb stuff, maybe this is the fix for you.

My other problems include complaints about no mousedev or keybdev modules, but this is because of redhats modified rc.sysinit as far as I know, so I dont think its a real show stopper.

last on the list is loads of errors about hotplug not being able to find files, something is wrong with pci hotplugging etc, etc. I assume this is to do with the upgrade but I dont know what to change to fix it.

Still everything seems to be working ok, so maybe I needn't worry, any tips or ideas welcomed.

cheers Max

It seems that I had/have the same problems (I upgraded to 2.6.4). I have usb mouse too and I didn't get it to work, so I put it to PS/2 and then it worked (I read about those ochis and pochis, but I don't remember what was the problem I didn't get it to work, I suppose that I was too lazy to put the mouse back to the usb slot). And ohter "problems" are the same, I think (some extra red FAILED labels on startup).

Is the cdrw working in your case? After installing the new kernel I didn't get it to work. Automounting problems, I think.

But at the moment I am reinstalling that kernel with new configuration and I hope that some problems will be over then. Even that usb mouse problem.

slightly off topic

Hey, quick question. I'm fairly new to linux, learning my way around. Does anyone have any good resources that discuss how devices are loaded, modprobe, using USB mice, boot process, etc? I was setting up gentoo, and that was one of my problems (that and X's config).

FC1 is up and running.

Thanks,

Jeff

Chapters 8-10 will probably have what you want. This looks like an awesome resource.... (I just found it)

I agree. I actually printed out that entireguide and the NAG (Network Admin's Guide) a while back and got it binded! Used the University's paper and ink!

maxb: Maybe if you browse through Dave Jones of Red Hat's 2.6 kernel post halloween document ) aka 2.6 what to expect) for things that have been changed to get ideas where things are different.
http://www.linux.org.uk/~davej/docs/...loween-2.6.txt

His kernel FAQ might also be useful:

Which also links to this:

Hi maxb,

Can you paste/attach the errors you're receiving?

Thanks,
