DSL dialup at the console?

I have configured my DSL connection using the NetworkManger plug, but how do I start/stop a DSL connection at the console?
That used to be possible in earlier version with ifup/ifdown [Provider].
Reading the NetworkManager manpage wasn't any help.

It was ifup/ifdown [device].
