GoogleEarth
Could someone tell me if there is a repository for Google, so I could try to install GoogleEarth in Fedora 11. I have downloaded GoogleEarth from the GoogleEarth website and installed it, but I seem to have problems getting it to run. I see the GoogleEarth splash screen...but nothing more. I have tried renaming libcrypto.so.0.9.8 to libcrypto.so.0.9.8.bak, which solves the problem with some other Linux distros, but doesn't seem to help here.
Maybe someone could let me know if others are having a problem with GoogleEarth in Fedora 11, or if it's something I'm doing wrong.
Edit: Incidentally, previous installations of GoogleEarth using other distros was done on this same box with the same hardware. Nothing changed except for installing Fedora.
Thanks,
zenarcher

Thanks for that link...I will give it a try. I forgot to mention that I have SELinux disabled, so I don't think that is causing the problem. I'll try your link and post back.
Thanks,
zenarcher

I downloaded from the link leigh provided and opted to open with kpackagekit, but nothing happened. I then downloaded and saved to the desktop and tried to open with kpackagekit and with package installer both...and nothing happens. Just a bouncing cursor which eventually goes away. Am I doing something wrong, or is there another way to try to install?
Thanks,
zenarcher

Thanks for that, leigh. I followed your instructions, but when I try to start GoogleEarth, I see the splash screen then, it goes away. I tried running googleearth from a terminal and here's what I get:

I tried that first, downloading from GoogleEarth, but had no luck with that, either, for some reason. I tried with this F11 preview and the previous test release and no luck with either. I don't know what the problem is that I'm having for sure.
Cheers,
zenarcher

Okay, I just don't understand my problem with GoogleEarth. I just did a fresh install and all the available updates for Fedora 11 (64 bit) on 20 May. I'll try to explain exactly what I've done and maybe someone can offer some assistance.
The very first thing I do after a fresh install is disable SELinux, so I'm sure that's not the problem.
I've installed GoogleEarth many, many times in many different distros without an issue, so I've followed the usual procedure but I've gotten nowhere.
First I tried downloading GoogleEarth from their website, saving the .bin file to the Desktop. From a terminal, I ran sh GoogleEarth......bin and the install proceeds normally, including creating a GoogleEarth icon on the desktop. When I click on that icon, the GoogleEarth splash screen opens....then closes. nothing more.
I then tried leigh's method, as shown in an earlier post. Again, the install appears to go fine, but I get the same result as with the install from the GoogleEarth website.
From Dolphin, I see the google-earth folder in Home, with what appears to be all usual files. If I open a terminal and type googleearth or googleearth.bin, I only get "Command not found." If I enter uninstall, I get the same message, although I see the uninstall command in the google-earth folder.
Some time back, I know there was an issue with the libcrypto file in GoogleEarth and I had to rename it as .bak, then GoogleEarth would run fine. Until doing so, I would only see the splash screen, then GoogleEarth would close, just as I get now. I tried renaming libcrypto, but that did not correct the problem.
The frustrating part is that I seem to be the only one I've found with this problem, since others say they followed the same procedure and GoogleEarth works perfectly. I'm at a complete loss and figure I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Any help in figuring out what and why I can't seem to get GoogleEarth to work would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
zenarcher

There is a HowTo in Gernan Language:
http://fedorablog.de/archives/569-Up...Fedora-11.html
I did not test it, due I do not use GoogleEarth.
If you need some translation, please feel free to ask. The HowTo states all commands, which are needed.
Good luck.

The solution seems to have been to reinstall Kubuntu 9.04 or Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1. Works perfectly in both.
Cheers,

whoa whoa whoa. Back up. Your solution to the problem is to install a different distribution? Hello hammer, I have some nails here.
your signature shows you have nvidia graphics. the stack trace shows it using /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 and you're running x86_64. If you're using the binary proprietary drivers from nvidia, the problem is most likely that you failed to install the 32-bit libGL libraries. Assuming rpmfusion repositories that would be:
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-180.51-1.fc11.i586

ok, so I downloaded the file from
http://dl.google.com/earth/client/cu...EarthLinux.bin
I then got the same stack as zenarcher, but, as wangmaster said, installation of the 32bit nvidia libs solved it. now i only have to figure how to get rid of that crappy font...
