Make sure you vote!!!

PS: I am starting another thread on Gigabyte vs. ASUS also with a poll. Please vote.

Which ever brand on the polls is the highest when I have saved up enough money, I will most likely buy.

I like polls. Voting is patriotic (no matter which country you are from)

I thought this poll would help me in the end. Plus, like you said it is fun for everyone else too.

Thanks for the positive feedback,

Since AMD is winning so far, I decided to look at some AMD processors.

I am trying to find one that is compatible with this graphics card an the processor needs to be at least 2.8 Ghz Quad core (AMD):

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...ode=24-4683100

On the mobo thread someone mentioned Tyan and said it was High-end. Is Tyan better than Gigabyte and ASUS.

What does x4 refer to in the AMD processor? Is it simply refering to the number of cores or is it referring to the processor being overclocked or what?

Also, I am wondering if the graphics card is overkill. I don't really play any games. Unless you count Tuxpuck. I do however want 1080p HD with very good OpenGL. Remember, this will be a mythtv and a couple of services (SSH, Media, NX, Mythweb, Apache, VNC, Samba, NFS, print, OpenVPN etc). I will be the only one with access to all of these. I will however share Samba, print, and OpenVPN with my mom.

Do you think this graphics card is overkill?

Phenom X4 is the name of AMD's quad-core processors, so it's referring to the series of quad-core AMD CPUs. Regarding overkill, I would agree there. Unless you're doing some really extreme gaming, a $100 GPU (8xxx series from nVidia or the 43xx series from AMD) will cut it for basic games and HD video playback. I have a cheap (a $70 GeForce 7300GS) that can still play Battlefield 2 on decent settings, so there's no need to drop a few hundred just for HD playback!

Also, remember that clock speed isn't everything. A 2.8GHz Intel CPU won't perform the same as an AMD 2.8GHz, and even within a single brand (Intel vs Intel or AMD vs AMD) CPUs with the same clock speed will have an enormous performance gap if you compare across different microarchitectures.

OK thanks for the info. Will the graphics cards you suggested perform well with opengl 2.0.

Also, are there any free mmorpg games that take place in mid-evil times. That would be rated say "teen".

PS: I haven't owned any "M" games since mortal kombat trilogy on my old sega saturn. LOL

Thanks,

AnimeFreak

The 7300GS is a bit outdated now - for $70 you could get yourself a much better card. If you want, browse on NewEgg by price and on the cards that match your price range, click the 'Specifications' tab and you'll be able to see what version of DirectX and OpenGL the GPU supports. For example this one is a passive (no fans, so nice & quiet) that supports DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.0. It's not very powerful, but enough to handle 1080p decoding or some basic gaming.

Both ATI and nVidia have their problems... ATI is just having more troubles than nVidia at the moment, as the open-source drivers haven't reached their full potential yet.

Which has a better supported proprietary driver, as I will probably use that for opengl?

Also, I do want to play tux cart. Is this still overkill? Also, do you know of any fighting based mmorpg games.

Keep it around teen please. Meaning no gore and limited to no blood, please.

I have run into a bit of a snag.

I am currently living with my mom, but will be moving out in September or maybe even sooner.

I will need to save for an apartment. I will need to put saving money to build a computer on hold until I get settled in my new apartment <===== which take at least a couple of months.
