Another solution you might want to try is to install xdvik -- it's in the Fedora 9 repositories (xdvik-22.84.14-4.fc9).
You didn't explicitly say, but it sounds like you are using LaTeX directly from a Terminal. If so, you might consider trying a LaTeX front-end / IDE such as Texmaker or Kile. I feel more comfortable using a front-end and it helps me to be more productive. I have both programs installed in my Fedora 9 (GNOME version) and they both work fine.
They are available from the repos: texmaker-1:1.8-1.fc9 and kile-2.0.3-1.fc9.
In my experience, their default configurations for building and viewing DVIs and PDFs work fine out of the box. However, if you try them and find that you need some configuration tips, let me know; I'd be glad to send you a few screenshots.
