Any distro would do if you beef up that RAM. I'm concern on that part.

You will need to read the hardware requirement & release notes per distro.

Older version of Fedora such as Fedora 5/6/7/8 will do nicely and particularly 5 & 6. You can still download them but you will not be able to update them at all-if I am correct as they have already reached their EOL- end of life dates. After EOL for any version updates are no longer available. But with the above mentioned old version you should be able to do
make programs in C language and play music without much trouble. I still have an old laptop with similar RAM and CPU as yours and it is still running Fedora 5 brillinatly. Please ask if you have more questions. Good luck

2.4.2.1. Hardware requirements for x86

In order to use specific features of Fedora 10 during or after installation, you may need to know details of other hardware components such as video and network cards.

2.4.2.1.1. Processor and memory

The following CPU specifications are stated in terms of Intel processors. Other processors, such as those from AMD, Cyrix, and VIA that are compatible with and equivalent to the following Intel processors, may also be used with Fedora.

Fedora 10 requires an Intel Pentium or better processor, and is optimized for Pentium 4 and later processors.

*

Recommended for text-mode: 200 MHz Pentium-class or better
*

Recommended for graphical: 400 MHz Pentium II or better
*

Minimum RAM for text-mode: 128MiB
*

Minimum RAM for graphical: 192MiB
*

Recommended RAM for graphical: 256MiB

Yes right, 512 mb or RAM is quite good for any 32 bit Fedora version including the new Fedora 10. Your CPU seems to be ok. Here you can find old versions.

Hi tech291083,

The OP doesn't need to go back that far. With his configuration he could use DSL (http://damnsmalllinux.org/).

Here's a list of Linux running on the latest kernel that OP could use:
