Unhappy How to download and install a package (zip package)

Hi...

Sometimes i have on some magazines or Internet Zip packages that are the answer of what i am looking for.

Maybe this is too basic , maybe i am a real newbie, but this is driving me crazy.

Wich tool and how can i do it?
c
Well, i am in position to say that i had downloaded from Internet or located the package in the Cd or DVD that comes with the magazine.

But now comes the big question. How can i put this package ( install) on my distro ???

Do i have to be a normal user or should it be root or su (superuser) ?

The packages that come with the distro is easy, because i select them and everything is done

As i told before, maybe this is a silly question, but i simple don't know how to install them and i need some of them to leave MS for good.

Any help will be appreciate

Best regards
Jazz

Perhaps telling folk what you're trying to install might help Are you sure there's no RPM available? Is there a readme file or install instructions in the tarball. Details, details, details!

Thanks Waine..
eFor example there is a product for a small enterprise in order to manage a database. . That's a produtct made with PHP and Mysql. it's name is Codeka .

1. Didn't see any .rpm file

When i download it ,it is a zip file.

2. Didn't see any instructions also after i extracted it. ( Maybe i extracted the product to a wrong directory ... i really don't know)

So, still having problems with this product.

By the way, you mentioned the issue of the .rpm file. I downloaded a .rpm files from IBM (ISeriesClient ACcess to access my AS400) . Everything were suposed to run ok. But once again, for some reason the process gave me a message and it stops the instalation. This is just to mention tuo products i really need, although the second one i can substitute bu tn5250 - with one small problem. i can't put it greater. But this for another post.

Waiting your helpul answers

Many times, various companies, for example, IBM will have an rpm for something, but it will be outdated, for example, only working with a very old kernel, e.g. 2.4.x. (Kernels are now 2.6.x)

When downloading rpms, you have to make sure it is compatible, or at least allegedly compatible. For example, downloading an rpm for Fedora Core 4 probably won't work, though in some instances, it might.

If you're talking about tarballs, that is files with tar.gz or tar.bz2 names, I have a page that might be a bit of use at http://home.roadrunner.com/~computer...u/tarball.html

If it's actually a zip file, there is a command called unzip that will open such files, but the trouble is, the result will usually be something that only runs in Windows.

Things to think about as you get more experienced. (However, I would recommend against them right at this moment, till you get a bit more comfortable with things.) There is wine, which can run *some* Windows files. There is also VirtualBox where you can install a fake Windows environment and run your Windows programs from there.

As for the AS400, I remember there was a terminal emulator, but it was lacking some essential features--my memory is hazy now, this was my previous job, which I left in Summer of 2007.

Thanks Scottro

i will make shure that is for Kernel 2.6.x and not for 2.4.x

According to the company, that package is to work on "Linux". I made the same question to me "ISn't zip for windows ?" i tried to contact the company but no answer until now.

About your helpi think the best idea is the Virtual Box, right ? or WIne.?

i think it will be more friendly for me the Virtual Box than Wine as i didn't get to make anything work with wine until now.

Maybe your experience on AS400 will give me a clue for those things.

I will check your page about the tar.gz and/or tar.bz2 to see what happens. I will tell you something about it.

Thanks again.

a link to this " Codeka" program might help.
is it this?
http://www.codeka.net/
google translation
http://translate.google.com/translat...-US:unofficial

if it is then it is a php application , and from a quick look should run on all *nix and windows running a Apache web server
and from the codeka.zip it looks ( Spanish is not my native language ) like it can be droped into the apache /?/?/www folder and then needs to be configured to run . I have NO idea on that part ( i would need to translate it )

hi there

it's really that one.

According to you, the only thing that i need is an Apache server, wich takes me to another doubt (or problem i think) .

How can i run an Apache server.

I think this is too much ignorance for all people in the forum, but that's me, a real newbye.

Maybe is a great task for me try to put all those things working, without learning a little of UNix or LINUX...

However, i wanna make this thing going on, just to see and learn..

Once again, any help will be appreciate...

Best regards
Jazz

FIRST I would NOT use a web based app like CodeKa for A BUSINESS / .And TRUST THE COMPANY SECURITY to it WITHOUT at least one to two years experience locking down a a Apache web server .

If at all possible find a different app to use ( one that is not web based )
or higher a firm to install it and administer it .
-- OR --
FIRST Get the two years experience building and installing the apache stack ( by hand ) and DO NOT USE THE RPM's to install it for the first 12 system installs, that you do .
learn HOW and WHAT files must be edited in order to lock it down seeing it is to be used in a BUSINESS environment .
