Irretrievable crash following screen locking

Hi all,

new to Fedora and new to the forum. I have successfully installed Fedora 10 64 bit on my brand new quad core Dell Optiplex 9600 (I have to use 64 bit linux since I will be running DNA sequence assembly software that requires a lot of RAM. ). It has 8GB of RAM and two hard drives, one with an XP installation and one with a FC10 64 bit installation. I have fully updated the system and it seems overall pretty stable. By the way, there is no graphics card installed, so I assume the display is running off the integrated Intel shared RAM graphics (can't remember the exact name).

Overall, I have two problems.

The first, and most serious, is that when I leave the computer and want to lock the screen (from Gnome menu, - system, lock screen) if I retype my password immediately, all is well.However, if I go away for an hour or so, the system is unresponsive, with the display remaining in standby mode. If I type my password in blind, the screen still does not switch on. Turning the monitor on and off also does not trigger the monitor to switch on.

Has anyone else encountered anything similar or have a possible solution. Typing this has made me think that I should as a first step disable the screensaver and see what happens.

My second problem is that Java is not working. I think that I would like to remove all my attempts at Java installation and start again. I have tried to use the Java machine that came with the installation and have also tried to install the Blackdown Java that is detailed here:

Any thoughts on how to uninstall Java and start again would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much for reading and I would appreciate any comments and suggestions that you may have.
Best wishes,

K

to me it seems like the first problem could be along the lines of this one;

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...k+screen+death

they said they found a solution at
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=160312

but you should be aware that these posts are fairly old... [so be careful and look through what is going on to make sure it's still relavent]

I know I had a problem like this too - although I'm not sure if I ever got it fixed. I think that I could avoid it by using metacity though for the most part and not putting the computer on suspend (I know it's not a perfect solution though).
Have a think about your xorg.conf options though, maybe something can be done here... Also, could you try not having the screen go black ever (I think you can set this with the screen saver stuff) and then just switching your monitor off manually - it might work as a quick work-around.
