Sony Vaio headphone jack problem

When I plug my headphones in to my laptop (see description in sig line plz) I get wonderful sound that is fully controllable from my on-screen and/or keyboard Fn buttons..the problem is that I still have sound coming out of my regular speakers. With the other OS, they cut out when I use headphones. I've tried all the volume adjustments I can find, and the headphone switch does work in that it turns my headphone audio on/off. Any ideas?
