Fedora 10 Java issue

I'm having a very strange problem with Java on F10. I've just installed F10 after using F9 for the last few months. I'm also using the Sun JRE version 1.6.0_11 (which I was also using on F9).

I have an applet that I use to manage some services in our office. When I load it up I am greeted with a login screen, which is normal.

The problem appears when I attempt to log in, when I click in the 'username' text field I cannot type anything. If I click in the 'password' field I can type something. Needless to say I am unable to log into this applet which I really need to do.

I've tried uninstalling Java, clearing the cache, switching to the OpenJDK, reinstalling the firefox plugin etc. all to no avail.

I do know that this applet does not run properly with OpenJDK and it does require the SUN JRE.

I did notice a posting somewhere else where a person was reporting that they could not use some Java chat applet since they could not type in the text area.

I'm running FF 3.0.5 and the SUN Jre version 1.6.0_11 I have also tried 1.6.0_5 and 1.6.0_7.

Any ideas/help appreciated.

Conor

I'm the guy who had the same problem with the username field for the java chat applet. I think the problem is specifically with Fedora 10 GNOME or GTK. The applet actually works OK in F10 KDE, as well as in F9 GNOME and Ubuntu 8.10 GNOME, which is the same version as F10 GNOME (2.24). If you have KDE installed, does your app work in KDE?

I guess no one else has experienced this, or knows what else to do to fix this.

A possible fix for this problem: change the plugin that firefox uses.

After installing the sun jre1.6.0_11 package into /opt, the plugin that we stick into firefox is usually /opt/jre1.6.0_11/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Well, use a different plugin instead: /opt/jre1.6.0_11/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
This is the plugin that ubuntu sticks into firefox...and it works. So this is what I did to get it working. Open a terminal, become root, get rid of the old plugin, link to the new plugin:

Code:
$ su
# rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
# rm /home/myusername/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
# ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_11/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /home/myusername/.mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2.so
Then I deleted my old /home/myusername/.java folder

Restarted firefox, went to the java chat site I was having problems with, and was able to log in. Maybe this will work for you too.

mtl2002, that works perfectly.

I had actually found a work around involving turning off SCIM. I need to have Japanese input enabled on my machine from time to time and usually just use SCIM as my IME. Turning it off AFTER the applet had loaded usually let me type in the fields that had been giving me problems before, although this would usually take a few moments to 'warm up' i.e. typing random keys while in the input box.

Using the new plugin fixes it straight away, regardless of the input method being on or off.

Thanks for the tip.
