4:3 aspect ratio on a widescreen notebook using F10?

My notebook's native screen resolution is 1280x800. Whenever I switch to a 4:3 resolution (1024x768, 800x600, or 640x480) the image is stretched to use the entire screen, distorting the image. In OS X whenever I switch to one of those resolutions it maintains the correct aspect ratio with black bars along each side.

Is there any way to have it so that the aspect ratio is maintained? The video card is an Intel GMA950 (MacBook 2,1).

I'm almost sure the graphics card itself does the stretching.

That's what I thought was the case. On OS X I have the option of stretched or the default of maintaining the correct aspect ratio when selecting 4:3 resolutions, so I guess the card is capable of it.

I was hoping there was a way of configuring the driver to specify this. I had a look through the man pages for the intel driver and couldn't find anything there about stretching or aspect ratios, and couldn't find anything about it looking through the xrandr docs either.
