Turning off wireless [Fedora 10]

Hello!
I have a very simple problem. I want to be able to turn off and on my wireless, to save my battery.

1.Clicking "disable wireless" on Network Manager doesn't seem to disable the device (I want to save my battery, not hide networks).

2."iwconfig wlan0 txpower off" disables the device but then when I start it using "iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto" (and I can see that output from iwconfig comes back to the original state) - NetworkManager (nm-applet) doesn't discover any networks.... I tried refreshing NM list by clicking disable/enable - doesn't work. So, once I restart my wlan, I am not able to connect to any network...

I wanted also to disable automatic turning on of my wlan at boot. I set up "Activate device when computer starts" unchecked. Still, NM discovers all the networks around on boot.

I am really surprised that such simple things are not working properly in the 10th version of Fedora :/.

Best regards,
Theriel
