Red face GNU Chess really is impossible to beat

Finally! I was set for certain victory! Feeling macho, I figured I'd just get my last pawn across before owning the bored.

Well, you can get the source code and tweak it so that you always win.

Oh Thank GOD!
I thought it was just me!
The fring'n thing, I must have played 1000 times. I "won" maybe 2, but I don't know how I did when it happened.

i hate it when it always moves the queen's pawn forward (playing black) if i (white) move my kings pawn forward. it is really impossible to beat, but highly unimaginative.

I don't understand why they can't implement (or make more user-adjustable) features that allow:
-some moves to just be "random"
-not always make the "best" move -- i.e. maybe once in 3 turns (adjustable), the computer is restricted to making the "second best" (adjustable) move. These variables could be varied randomly within certain ranges, depending upon the chosen level of difficulty.
-maybe a little blindness. When the computer is focusing on one strategy (e.g. put my king into check, or capture my queen), it is less likely to "notice" vulnerabilities in certain areas of the board which are further away.

Is GNU Chess still being "developed," or is it just sort of the same thing forever? It seems like it could be made a lot better with, perhaps, some pretty minor enhancements. The gameplay would become more interesting, too, as right now it seems like it is at times too predictable.

EDIT:
Nevermind -- I see it hasn't been updated since 2003: http://www.gnu.org/software/chess/ChangeLog

Gnuchess is hardly the strongest computer chess program available for free. Try crafty.

If you want to beat gnuchess, you have to get it "out of the book" as quickly as possible. It has an opening play database that conserves clock at the beginning of the game. If you play an opening it doesn't recognize it has to burn timer early on and that affects its play in the middle and end game.

no thanks on trying a harder one, I am a poor enough chess player already, I don't need to be further humiliated by my desktop computer

GNU Chess is designed to create proficient players. The day you are able to win several games in a row, you will be ready for anything.

Thanks.
Joe.
