How to disaable auto-numbering in Open Office

Often I want to type a heading and not have it left justified on the page. When I do this in Open Office, it wants to start numbering the following lines. Even if I delete the numbers, the following lines stay slgihtly indented. What settings can I select to turn this horrible feature off?

In the upper buttons, there in one when you put the cursor over say: Numbering on/off.

Click this button.

I see. On the bottom-most tool part there is an icon that says numbering on/off. But it doesn't really turn auto number off in the whole document. You can highlight text and click this icon a number of times to get rid of the numbering and indentation.

But is there a way to get rid of auto-numbering so the new things you type don't get auto-screwed up?

Try to creating a wite area pressing several returns. Then select this area. Click for autonumbering off in all that area and begin to type from the first return.

Try turning off autoformat (format/autoformat/while typing) by unchecking the box.

This OO Writer help topic might be of use:

Creating Numbered or Bulleted Lists as You Type

I always found that to be annoying in MS Word, and find it to be just as annoying in OO Writer. I wish it were not the default, but I guess that enough people prefer it for it to be so.

To answer my own old thread, in Open Office 2.3, I find that I can pick Tools, AutoCorrect, then pick the Options tab and uncheck "Apply numbering - symbol:"
