NIC Inactive
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
I'm using Fedora 9. When I start my server, I can't connect to the internet. I've figured out that after turning on my server, I have to go to Network and activate my NIC... everytime. I have the setting set to start when the computer starts, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brad

Are you using the NetworkManager service or the network service?
For wired NICs that need to be activated on boot, I seem to see the best results sticking with the network service.

Thanks for the quick reply tjvanwyk. I'm using:
System - Administration - Network - (enter the Root Password here) - and get to Network Configuration.
What I see is Devices tab selected
Profile = checked
Status = Inactive
Device = eth0
All I have to do is click on Activate and it works.
If I select Edit button while this device is selected, I see:
Controlled by NetworkManager = Unchecked
Activate device when computer starts = checked
Allow all users to enable and disable the device = checked
Enable IPv6 configuration for this interface = Unchecked
Then I have my static IP set.
Is this the place you were speaking of?
Thanks again,
Brad

just check whether your network service is running:
chkconifg --list | grep network
see in levels 3 and 5 network is on
if not
chkconfig network on

I tried chkconfig and chkconifg. both of them say "command not found"
I tried Applications - System Tools - Terminal and Applications - System Tools - xTerm Terminal, and neither worked.
Do I need to turn something on?

Right!!! I always forget that.
I got in as root and the chkconfig ... worked.
My settings were
0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
I did chkconfig network on and
0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
Thanks!!
So I'm assuming this will make my NIC Active from now on when I start my PC?

No. That's just ascertaining whether you're using NetworkManager or network.
Looks like network is on and NetworkManager is on. My suspicion was that you had NetworkManager on, which can do weird things. But as you're using the network service, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Hmmm
I just went into System - Administration - Network - (enter the Root Password here) - and get to Network Configuration, and it is still off after I did
chkconfig network on
If I do System - Administration - Update System and click on the "Refresh" button, it says "No network connection available. Please check your connection settings and try again." My NIC is Active, and I can use the same dialog box to do Update Packages. Just the Refresh button doesn't work.
At the top of the screen there is an icon of 2 computers and it has a red "X" on it. If I hover the mouse over it, it says No Network Connection. If I click on it, Wired Network and device is unmanaged are grayed out, but VPN connections is active. If I right mouse click I can Edit Connections.
If I Edit Connections the Network Connections dialog pops up. In there I can Add, Edit or Delete Wired, Wireless, Mobile Broadband, VPN, or DSL connections each with their own tab. I've added a connection profile under the Wired tab.
Connect Automatically is checked
IPv4 is Manual, and I set up my IP, Netmask, Gateway, DNS, and Domain.
Not sure if any of that helps.
Thank you very much for your help.
