video signal out of range error

seemingly normal install of f9 on AMD quad 9600 on ECS A780GM-A mobo with built-in Radeon 3200 gfx. runs from the live disk OK, did the graphical install OK, after the reboot the monitor displayed an error about the signal being out of range. 89.9H, 59.9V. won't display the desktop or anything else. did the Cntrl-Alt-F1 thing, got a terminal which displayed normally. checked the X log, no EE, see the 3200 and the DellDell E773c CRT monitor listed. WTF, over. rebooted again, same thing. rebooted again, did the thing to add make it come up in single-user mode, OK. init 3, OK. init 5, ok and brought up X too. looked around some , changed the screen resolution to 800x600, K's of colors. reboot again, no help.

even though I see the Dell monitor and Radeon 3200 in the X log the the graphical utilities don't seem to know about them.

What now? the figures mentioned as being out of range on the monitor are well within the actual range of the monitor per the specs. Also, the monitor works fine in winders at 1024x768xmillions of colors x 75Hz vertical refresh.

Got any bright ideas?
