I'm running Fedora 8 with all the latest updates. My hostname is set to apptest1.<domain> in both places in the network setup (DNS tab and in the DHCP section of the wired eth0 device).
My problem is this: If I boot the machine up, I get an IP, but my name (apptest1) is not in our local Windows-based DNS. 'ping apptest1' gives host not found. Rebooting or restarting network services does nothing.
HOWEVER, if I change the host name to apptest2.<domain> in the two places and then restart the network service, 'ping apptest2' DOES WORK. If I change the name back to apptest1.<domain>, then that is in the DNS (and apptest2 isn't any more).
So, the question is...why isn't the name getting registered on boot up or when I restart network services, but it is when I change the name?
Is this even a Linux issue? I have opened a ticket with our network group, but who knows what will come of that.
Any insight would be appreciated.
