Desktop Selection (click and drag box)

Selecting items on my desktop with the selection box skyrockets my cpu useage. Is there any way of fixing that? I'm rather ADD and tend to entertain myself by making little boxes.

Also while using the touchpad on my laptop all my open windows sometimes arrange themselves on my desktop allowing me to select one to bring to the front, Are there any mouse gestures that are being activated behind the scenes? How can I turn that off (its only a minor inconvenience though).

I'm using Gnome, Fedora 9 x86-64. nvidia driver with a Quadro FX 570 card.

And an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz, 4 gigs of RAM.

And now it seems to not be lagging. Linux has always been a little touchy in my experience.
