No ethernet/sound with FC2/i386, ASUS K8N-E/nForce3

I just installed Fedora Core 2 i386 (not AMD64) on a new computer with an ASUS K8N-E mainboard (nForce3) with an AMD64-3400+. The installation went fine, but I have neither ethernet nor sound.
After plugging in a PCI ethernet card, I went to the nVidia web site and installed their Linux nForce drivers. The result was the same, no ethernet or sound from nForce.
Then I heard the 2.6.8 kernel has a newer forcedeth driver, so I installed version 2.6.8-1.521.i686; there is still no nViddia ethernet visible in lspci, kudzu or the Hardware Browser.
Grateful for any ideas.
