New files and folders not showing up

Hi, everyone, I'm new to Linux. So far, Fedora Core 4 has been awesome and I am seeing less and less of the old Windows. However, I've noticed a problem: whenever I download a file (to the Desktop by default), I don't see it afterwards. Not on the Desktop and not in the file browser, although I can access it in a terminal, so it's there. I've noticed this on the Desktop first, but it also happens in other folders. Tricky part is it doesn't happen all the time. The files usually show up next time I boot, but I hardly find that normal, especially because I haven't had problems with it so far. Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? Please try to keep technical terms to a minimum, as I am a little short of clueless.

Thanks in advance.

Try the commands "killall gnome-panel" and/or "killall nautilus" These will refresh the Gnome panel and the Gnome desktop.
