Manual to automatic IP

Hai there,
well for 2 months, in my hostel network i needed to install manually the ip, dns and gateway in order to connect to the internet.
today, we've been said that we SHOULD opt for the automatic ip recognition.
i did it. but it worked fine for a moment after reboot, i got no connection at all.
some friends too r having the same problem.
is there any particular reason for that?
y cant i connect with automatic ip recognition? i saw some technician working downstairs. So definitely i guess before the guy told us to opt for automatic ip, the technician sld have done somethingg first.
Im alone using FC distribution.
dont say in windoz, i got a blue screen

Open up the network device control
Applications--> System Settings-->Network
Click your device your using, and then click the Edit button at the top. Under the General tab, make sure your device is set to the following:
Automatically obtain Ip address setting with dhcp
make sure the checkbox is checked for Autoamtically obtain DNS information from provider
if you want the device to be activated at boot up, check that box as well
do a file then save. Reboot

if you still can't get a IP address, open the terminal
switch to root ( su -) issue this command
Code:
ifconfig -a
And post the results

well, ive been lucky to assist the admins live.
well, the prob is that something got automatically deactivated ( working on windoz) after he left yesterday
but whats kinda weird is that in windows i can connect thru msn messenger but in trillian i cant.
same in FC3, i cant connect thru Multi-procotol messaging client
even limewire refuses to connect
that admin is lame grr
