Fedora Extras is ready!
Get your fanciest trousers and party hat out, Fedora-Extras is ready! From the announcement:
"Thanks to the efforts of all the Extras contributors, you can now get
Fedora Extras packages from the main Fedora download site at
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu.../linux/extras/
Fedora Extras are sets of packages that augment Fedora Core but do not
replace Fedora Core component packages. These packages, like all packages
that are part of The Fedora Project, must conform to the legal
requirements of the project and conform to the Fedora Extras policies."
The full announcement can be found here
On other news: The Fedora User and Developer Conference, FUDCon, is shaping up. See the FUDCon website.

Looking at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu.../linux/extras/ it seems the Extras are only available for FC3 (for now?).

I am using Dag, FreshRPMS, Dries and NewRPMS for FC3 , and i think this repositories are not compatible with fedora.us or livna.org.

Extras are available for all versions of FC. For FC1
Code:
http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/1/i386/RPMS.stable/
for FC2,
Code:
http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/2/i386/RPMS.stable/
and for FC3,
Code:
http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/3/i386/RPMS.extras/
I don't think it is good idea to mix them (e.g., to use FC3 rpms for FC2), for potential dependency problems and possible incompatibility.

Fedora Extras is the offical extra-repository, some repositories may not be compatible with it, Like Dag or NewRPMS, and if not, you should not use them. Extras will most likely be part of Core 4 (out of the box). Repositories will have to be compatible with Extras or make it very clear that they are not. Contact your repository managers and ask.

I've been using the fedora-extras repo (for FC3) since Jan 24th.
This news seemed a little bit outdated to me.

Finally there are some packets are not compatibles at all.
i reported some conflicts after to update with Fedora-Extra:
Transaction Check Error: package liboil-0.2.2-1.1.fc3.rf (which is newer than liboil-0.2.2-1.1.fc3.fr) is already installed
file /usr/lib/liboiltmp1.so.0.0.0 conflicts between attempted installs of liboil-0.2.2-1.1.fc3.fr and liboil-0.3.0-1

That was there before extras was released, I ran into it
I believe i removed liboil and/or sfwdc or something like that and did the upgrade and installed anything that was removed.

By looking at file dates, I get impression that what used to be called pre-extras is now called extras ... no significant difference except more files added...

I expect that more repositories will choose to be compatible with fedora extras in the near future. until then I continue to stick to the packages in fedora extras and livna and only install a few additional packages manually.

Well I got this;
Code:
[root@deadhorse yum.repos.d]# ls -l fedora-extra.repo
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 399 Jan 30 09:49 fedora-extra.repo
[root@deadhorse yum.repos.d]# cat fedora-extra.repo
[fedora-extra]
name=fedora-extra
baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.extras
http://fedora.quicknet.nl/fedora/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.extras
http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/fedora/fedora/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.extras
http://fedora.mirror.sdv.fr/fedora/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.extras
#enabled=0
gpgcheck=0
It looks like I modified my file on Jan 30th but any way, the extras (not preextras!) have been online for a while..
