I do not understand what your problem is with VLC. I have it installed, and use it all the time. Can you post your issue?

And it is much easier to install vlc from the rpmfusion repo than use all of the stuff above, too.

just a yum install vlc is all that is needed

Agreed. I believe OP's post is a solution in need of a problem.

it is useful when you want your own customized version. latest vlc version. and if you want develop/study vlc

you probably won't be able to get sound on a dvd as it's (dolby) used on pretty much all dvds
