problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Today I plugged an ethernet cord into the router and printer.
The printer is found under: applications > administration > printing > HP-Laserjet-4M
Clicking this icon brings up Printer Properties, but the printer is not yet connecting with the printer.
I could use some suggestions on changing the Device URI from parallel to ethernet.
So far I have tried: socket://192.0.0.192:9100 ... but the screen keeps reverting back to parallel.
The terminal is not working -- I will need to upgrade the os.
Thanks very much.
Update: The Device URI now shows: socket://192.0.0.192:9100 ... but still won't print a test page.
I don't know if the :9100 is correct, I just saw that somewhere and added it on.

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Use the system-config-printer tool (it can be installed using yum). One of the options will be to add a network printer, and you can choose HP DirectJet as the type. From there you'll be able to select the HP Laserjet 4M driver (assuming you've installed the hpijs package).

Thanks very much for your help.
The printer was already showing on screen #1.
The terminal was surprisingly working, so I entered yum install system-config-printer and it loaded.
Was that supposed to load the hpijs package?
Screen #2 showed up.
I tried it with 192.0.0.192, and with 192.168.1.111 as in your example.
I had already gotten screen #3 and 4 previously but ran them again.
Now the printer is entered twice on screen #1, HP-Laserjet-4M and HP-Laserjet-4M-2.
Neither of them print a test page. Any ideas on what to do now?

Well, 192.168.1.111 is the IP address I assigned to my HP Laserjet 4 Plus, so it wasn't meant for you to use that same IP address; use the one you assign to your printer. It looks like you're having some trouble assigning that IP address. From your other posts it appears that your router's address is 192.168.1.1. So definitely do not use that as your printer's address; pick something in the 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 range that isn't being used. You should be able to do that through the printer's control panel (that's how I did mine). See the bottom of this page for how to do it via the panel (or through telnet).

Thanks much for that update. If I understand correctly, the first 3 sets of numbers need to be the same as the router, and the 4th set needs to be different.
router - 192.168.1.1
printer- 192.168.1.111 to 192.168.1.254 ... I'm selecting 192.168.1.211
I changed the IP in printer properties, tested with a cold restart, but the printer IP went back to 192.0.0.192 again.
The manual doesn't show a way to change the printer IP in the printer control panel.
The network screen on the laserjet 4M plus does not have the choices shown in either of the links.
I found this on a link "If the DHCP option is on, the printer will pick up an IP address automatically.
Turning that option off will allow you to set your own IP address."
There is no DHCP option, but maybe there's another option that does the same thing.
Update: Yes! It's called BOOTP. I'm setting the IP now, then will post the steps and results.
Yes! The printer is working! Thanks very much for all the excellent guidance and suggestions.
Thanks to Joel for posting the following solution at this link on June 11, 2003.
Press and hold the ONLINE button while powering on the printer.
"08 Cold Reset" will be displayed and you can release the ONLINE button.
Wait for aprox. 5 minutes and then configure the Jetdirect through the front panel.
Press MENU, repeatedly, until one of the following messages appears on the control panel:
MIO MENU
Press ITEM. CFG NETWORK=NO* will appear.
Press the PLUS button once. CFG NETWORK=YES* will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.
Press ITEM repeatedly until CFG TCP/IP=NO* appears.
Press the PLUS button. CFG TCP/IP=YES* will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.
Press ITEM until BOOTP=YES* appears.
Press the PLUS button. BOOTP=NO will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.
(Note: When using BootP or DHCP, keep the setting BOOTP=YES*.
The BootP or DHCP server will configure the TCP/IP parameters on the HP Jetdirect.
No other TCP/IP configuring is necessary.) -- I ignored this part.
Press ITEM. IP BYTE 1 = (value) will appear. -- In my case this was 192.
Press the PLUS button until the value of the first byte of the IP address appears on the control-panel display.
By pressing SHIFT and the PLUS button, the value will decrease.
Press ENTER or SELECT.
Press ITEM to continue. Repeat Steps 11-13 to configure the remaining bytes of the IP address.
For me the bytes were:
1- 192
2- 168
3- 1
4- 211
(Repeat Steps 11-13 to configure the subnet mask bytes (SM BYTE 1=),
syslog server IP address (LG BYTE 1=), default gateway (GW BYTE 1=), and timeout (TIMEOUT=).) -- I ignored this part.
The printer works with the Gateway at 0.0.0.0 but did not work when set at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.211.
I'm not sure if this gateway setting is correct.
Press ONLINE. Print a self-test page to verify the IP settings.
If the test page does not show the correct settings, power cycle the printer and reprint the test page.
The self test page printed fine from applications > administration > printing > printer properties.
This is the first time this printer has worked for quite a few years! Thanks again, very much for your great suggestions!

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Another option is using hplip
yum install hplip
Then, if you know the printer's address--on the 4M, if I remember, you should be able to print a configuration page which will give the address--, you can install with
hp-setup -i <address>
It will take you through a few questions, most of which can be answered by just hitting enter and accepting the default.
Make sure you have cups and that it's running
pgrep cups
If it's running, you should get back a number, 3 or more likely 4 or 5 digits. Doesn't matter, as long as some number comes back.
If you don't get anything back, try
service cups start
If you get an error with that command, post it here.

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Thank you very much.
yum install hplip ran fine in the terminal.
The self test page, is the only page that shows an address, 192.0.0.192 IP address / gateway.
Is that the printer address?
pgrep cups returned a 4 digit number.
hp-setup -i 192.0.0.192 returned the following:
Code:
0* usb Universal Serial Bus (USB)
1 net Network/Ethernet/Wireless (direct connection or JetDirect)
2 par Parallel Port (LPT:)
Enter number 0...2 for connection type (q=quit, enter=usb*) ? 1
Using connection type: net
error: Invalid device URI:
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.

Another easy way to get the printer address would be to log onto the router you plugged it into and look at the DHCP lease page, the printer IP should be on there assuming it's using dhcp to get a IP lease. Most routers use 192.168.1.1 as the page on the router you'd see that information (you might need to log on using a username password probably posted on the router case , "admin" and "password" are pretty typical).

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
I'm not sure, unless your firewall may be blocking it. The hp-setup -i 192.168.0.192 should have found it.
@Marko, judging from the printer's address, I'm guessing it's one of the routers that use 192.168.0.1 rather than 1.1. Cisco/Linksys tend to use 192.168.1, D-Link and possibly Netgear use 192.168.0.1.
I hate to tell someone turn off their firewall, but as it's behind a router, it's at least worth testing for a few minutes.
Try
iptables -F
That will turn them off for a few minutes (the F is for flush)
Then please try the hp-setup -i 192.168.0.192 once more. If it works, then we know it's a firewall and can deal with it. Regardless of whether it does work or not, then please restart your iptables with
service iptables restart
(That's the old version of the command, but still works). Note that if the iptables -F did fix the problem, starting them again will temporarily stop it from working, but we'll worry about that if it does turn out to be the problem.

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Thank you very much for all the helpful suggestions.
iptables -F
hp-setup -i 192.168.0.192
hp-setup -i 192.168.1.1
hp-setup -i 192.0.0.192 All got the same response as before
service iptables restart
The modem is a verizon westell 7500, model # A90-750015-07.

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Ok, thanks for trying. I'm not sure why it's not seeing it.
I would probably now test with a live CD of another distribution, to try to see if it's a Fedora only issue.

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Could the problem be something to do with the motherboard or the bios?
I typed 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, and the verizon page for the router came up with 3 columns:
my gateway -- my network -- action zone
There's an IP address under gateway, and an IP address of 192.168.1.39 under my network.
I will try the 192.168.1.39 address and see what happens.
hp-setup -i 192.168.1.39
iptables -F
hp-setup -i 192.168.1.39
service iptables restart .. both got the same response as before.
Nothing happens when I type 192.168.1.39 in the address bar, so 192.168.1.1 must be the right address.
Update, the defaults are 7500 IP 192.168.1.1, username and password admin and password, printer default IP 192.168.1.1.

Trying to log on to the router with admin-password or admin-admin doesn't work. They are not shown on the case.
Okay how does this sound. I have had this printer a long time, and have never used it with this router.
Is it possible the printer default IP is something entirely different? If so, can I reset the printer IP so it will accept the router IP?

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Yes, that is possible. If it's showing 192.168.0.something and your computer has an address of 192.168.1 something, then, as the Internet meme goes, (often when showing a car crashed into a wall), There's your problem.
http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/...r-problem2.jpg
I'm going to sleep soon, but if this IS the case--that is, that your computer's address is a 192.168.1.x and the printer is that 192.168.0.32 that you gave earlier, then, I believe that that printer can be result to defaults and will then, if you attach it to the router, be able to get an address from the router through DHCP.
OK, here's the reset method.
http://printertechs.com/tech/coldreset.php
A bit more googling did NOT confirm that I'm right about hooking it up to the router and it automatically using DHCP. You might have to set that in the printer.
Ah--my aging memory does seem to be correct http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/hp-...-t1933058.html indicates that after the reset, it will get an address from your router.

Smr, thank you very much for responding.
Actually the printer self test page shows an IP address and gateway of 192.0.0.192.
Quote:

Hold the Online button while turning the printer on. This will do a cold reset of both the printer and the JetDirect. This will set the JetDirect to use DHCP so it can get an in-range IP from your network. Print the self test page and see if it says the JetDirect is installed.
|
Progress! The IP address and gateway on the printer self test page are 0.0.0.0 now.
hp-setup -i 192.168.1.1
iptables -F
hp-setup -i 192.168.1.1
service iptables restart .. Alas, both got the same response as before.
I remember the router password!

Re: problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet
Yeah, it might take a little while to get an address from the router. It will have to be connected to the router with an ethernet cable. At that point, it should be able to get an address--it will start with that 0.0.0.0 but in a few minutes should get something.
If not, and it has an LCD panel, then you might be able to set the address. Just choose 192.168.1. <something not being shown on the router's list> with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1
Don't worry about the iptables stuff yet--first see if that printer gets a 192.168.1.something address, then try the hp-setup -i <printer-address>
