Network Manager Not Working

I've just installed 3.3.4 kernel with kmod-staging on my laptop in order to get my rtl8187se wireless card to work. Now it will detect networks, but on networks with WEP protection it shows 2 password prompts, one in a translucent gnome 3 scheme and the other in a fall back white. The black one will allow the full password to be entered but then closes and won't connect, and the white one will allow a connection but only if the password is less than 5 digits as it won't allow anymore to be entered. any help with this would be much appreiated.
