No sound on Firefox with kernel 2.6.42.7-1.fc15.x86_64

Hi,

Since I've updated my kernel, the sound on Firefox (youtube for example) doesn't work. However, the sound work for music I have on my computer and I can even listen to a radio online if I listen it through Amarok but the same radio doesn't work directly from the webpage through Firefox 11.0.
And I am still unable to make vmware player working since the last 2 or 3 last updates of kernel.
And here is a naive question: Should I carry on updating the kernel despite of the various problems or stick to one which works?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers-

I don't know what the kernel has to do with it but maybe you just don't have sound in Flash?
In Debian which is what I used and have more experience, if you're using pulseaudio you need their libasound2-plugins package for it to work with Flash.
I'm not sure about it in Fedora (I'm using version 17) but it's probably some alsa compatibility plugin.
So maybe something was removed from your system lately, or got misconfigured?

Thanks. I have had a look at the plugin I have installed and desactivated DivX and it now works!
How to know if the plugins need to be updated?
Cheers

Most plugins, like the DivX one, comes from the totem plugins (package totem-mozplugin) which makes totem play media files in firefox (depending on which kind of files it's actually able to play, which depends on which gstreamer plugin packages you have installed).

Other plugins, like the free java one (icedtea), are also dependent on a package.

So these plugins can only be updated from the package system.
Other plugins that are from external sources like java from Oracle or Flash from Adobe, you can check if they're up-to-date by going to tools>add-ons>plugins and clicking the link to check to see if they're up-to-date.

As for your specific problem, I don't have it here as I don't have Flash installed. If I need to use Flash then I open Google Chrome, which has Flash built-in.

So all-in-all the divx plugin depends probably on one of the gstreamer-plugins packages but it's also very probable that the issue is with the Flash plugin as specially the latest version is quite buggy and they won't update it anymore.

Hi again,

I have now the opposite problem: the sound does work on firefox but not anymore on Amarok. I am still with the same kernel, fedora 15 64 bits and Amarok 1.4.1.
Any ideas?
Cheers
