Kernel panic on boot, since 3.3.1

Since the 3.3.1 kernel arrived in the F16 repos, my machine has been throwing a kernel panic on boot. It can still boot 3.2.10 happily, but nothing after that.

The exact error message, straight after "Loading initial ramdisk..."

PANIC: early exception 06 rip 10:ffffffff81d369ef error 0 cr2 0

This is a Dell XPS L501X, running a fully updated 64-bit build of F16.

I had thought that I would just cope with booting an older kernel until the arrival of F17, but I've just booted F17 alpha, and I get the same error. I've tried all the kernel parameters I can think of: noapic, disableapic, mce=off, acpi=off.

I've got quite a few machines lying around, and they all work just fine except this one.

Any ideas?

James

An update: I've discovered that it boots OK if I disable wifi in the BIOS! That is useful as a clue as to where things are going wrong, but not much of a workaround on a laptop...

That's odd. Your laptops must be just slightly older than mine. I have a Dell XPS L502X and I'm booting just fine in kernel 3.3.1-3.

Angry Re: Kernel panic on boot, since 3.3.1

I've got the same problem, same laptop (XPS L501X). Can't seem to get it to boot by disabling the wireless in the BIOS, unless I'm missing something.
Also had to disable the nVidia drivers (from rpmfusion) as they don't seem to be booting with the older 3.2.10 kernel any more.

Dell Studio XPS 13 - Same problem

64-bit FC16

Same errors for 3.3.1-3 and 3.3.1-5

Clean boot into 3.1.0-7 (next most recent due to recent install)

Ok, guys. Get on over to bugzilla and file a bug report on this, or add your two cents to one that's already there. They don't know what's broke until we tell them.

Re: Kernel panic on boot, since 3.3.1

Live usb kernel panicked for me, but I added modprobe.blacklist=ite_cir to the kernel line at boot and it works. Looks like the ir driver was stopping mine from boot, and I don't need it anyway.
