Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

Hi,
I have the latest English version of f16, 64-bit. Everything works fine and no problem.
However, I've noticed that two lines of some Cyrillic-type chracters appear at startup right after the message 'loading initial ramdisk...'

Could someone please tell me what are these and why I should get them, when I did specify that I am in the UK and I would like the English version , please?

Thanks in advance.

I get them also just as you do on my 64-bit version of F16 on my desktop. Slight annoyance but doesn't affect anything so long as it books up properly. . .

Can't tell how to get rid of them though. ..

Same here. I am seeing that too! Did not bother even trying to fix that because everything else is working perfectly! It does not do that on a older laptop though.

Just out of curiosity, do you guys have a discrete graphics card in your system? That's one of the big differences between my older and current laptop.

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
My graphic card is a NVidia GeForce 8400 GS.

However, I am a bit concerened about these characters showing up as I do not understand as to why?
MY Locale is set to UK, language is British English and so on.
I have installed a couple of themes and am using KDE desktop. Has this got to do with it?
I have also tried to install a few applications, some with success, some not.

I can supply any tech info anyone requires to get to the bottom of this.
I am getting a bit paranoid...
Help please?

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

I'm using a Nvidia 520 graphics card with 2gig ram. A lower end cheap card which works well. I've notice this on other cards also on other systems I've built. . . .no big deal in my opinion.

I was also worried about this initially, but the system has been remarkably stable. Obviously, I do not know what that message is but it does not seem to affect anything at all. Everything just works the way it is supposed to.

So, I would say, based on my experience, it is a not a big deal.

Can you get a screen shot?

They may be a bad character string in an i18 format being interpreted by the virtual terminal using the wrong font spec.

I see the "boot time penguin at no extra cost" on a newer laptop.
On my older desktop I see these characters. This is when the VESA
graphics driver is enabled.

I've been seeing this as well, my guess is - as goodfella suggests - that it's to do with the basic boot configuration, before the full sysytem boots and loads your personal settings. Like notamedic I'm finding F16 really stable, so stable it's almost boring!

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

Hi,
Thanks for all the kind replies. But, still none the wiser.
Here's a screenshot of the two lines.
NB.: I've also noticed that sometimes three lines are displayed. However, I get two lines most of the times, as attached.
Thanks again.

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

That looks to me like a font error.

Especially if you are using a European character set.

I bet if you set the font to a US default it would be readable...

I have US default and my screen looks identical to the screenshot - well, similar. I don't know if I can match it character by character (from memory).

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

some of them are cyrillic characters, but not all. those with diactric, double acute accent ( ˝ ), looks like german and turkish as well.

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

Just to chime in, same thing here, only on the desktop with nvidia graphics. The laptop with the Intel graphics doesn't exhibit the same behavior. Come to think of it, I don't see it on my server either. That has an older nvidia card but it just boots to runlevel 3.

On the desktop with Fedora 16 and 17 / Nvidia - Yes
On the laptop with Fedora 16 and 17 / Intel - No
On the desktop server with Fedora 16 / Nvidia - No

I think I've seen this from Fedora 15 too, but I can't be sure.

Re: Strange [Cyrillic?] characters at startup

Do you think this has this got anything to do with using nouveau driver as against using nvidia driver from rpmfusion? I am using nouveau driver on my laptop. This behavior seems remarkably consistent
