picasa subsitute?

Hi All,

Apparently Google has discontinued Picasa for Linux.

I have a customer that was using the Picasa feature that reduced the size of pictures before eMailing them. Since I just upgrade him from CentOS 4 to fc16, he has lost that utility.

Does anyone have a favorite substitute for Picasa and its eMail size reduction feature?

Many thanks,
-T

I think most photo apps can do that. Digikam has an email option in the export menu that allows you to select images then resize and even change the format.

You don't need to go to pbone, it is in the repos
yum install digikam

It is part of KDE so it will bring in lots of dependencies if you don't have kde installed.

Thank you. I only went to pbone as this computer is Scientific Linux 6.2 and I do not have access to FC16's repos.

yes no fooling! A lot. I already had to install kdesu and oh boy did that install a lot of stuff. Hopefully, most of the stuff needed by digikam is already installed.

Thank you for the tips!

Check you also get kipi-plugins. It is a dependency of digikam in Fedora but wasn't always so. It adds the extra functionality to digikam including the email option.

The email option is on the Export menu. If you don't want to confuse the users with all the other options there go to settings - configure digikam - Kipi plugins and un-select the the ones you don't need.

If you're using Gnome, have you looked at Shotwell? It has a "send to" feature where you can resize the photo then send it to email. It works well, I just tried it.

My favourite quick way of resizing photos for sending/posting is the Nautilus plugin which comes up on the right-click menu when you select an image.

# yum install nautilus-image-converter

Gthumb can also do that, plus red-eye removal and few more easy tricks.
