Ralink rt3090sta WLAN card issue (F16)

My friend has a HP Probook 4520s. Inside is a combined WLAN+Bluetooth-card by Ralink: rt3090sta. Currently, the laptop is running Fedora 16 x86_64 Gnome.

Has somebody already tried this module? http://koji.russianfedora.ru/koji/buildinfo?buildID=750

At the moment my friend is using the modules, that are used by Fedora 16 out of the box. I think that's rt28**...

From time to time, NetworkManager fails to connect to the WPA-hotspot, even though the router itself is okay. What's happening is: NetworkManager is trying to connect for 10-20 seconds, fails and subsequently asks the user for the WPA-key. After that the whole procedure restarts and can be repeated dozens of times. Sometimes a reboot helps, sometimes not. And in some cases, NetworkManager suddenly successfully connects to the hotspot without problems after having failed ten oder twenty times.

I'm quite sure, the reason for this behaviour is the wlan drivers, since my laptop (ThinkPad T400s) is also running Fedora 16 (64bit) with Gnome and has never encountered such problems when trying to login to that specific hotspot.

Re: Ralink rt3090sta WLAN card issue (F16)

I tried that already. Compiling first yielded an error message that I could solve using some patch from the internet. But after it had compiled successfully and I loaded the module, wifi wouldn't work any more and the whole system became unstable. Then I read somewhere to blacklist rt28** modules. After I had done this, wifi still didn't work and the system became even more unstable...

Is there anybody who successfuly built the Ralink-drivers on Fedora 16 and can tell me the steps how to do this and what has to be configured manually after "make install"?

These are the loaded modules at the moment:
Code:
$ lsmod | grep rt2
rt2800pci 9507 0
rt2800lib 39527 1 rt2800pci
crc_ccitt 1557 1 rt2800lib
rt2x00pci 5768 1 rt2800pci
rt2x00lib 46254 3 rt2800pci,rt2800lib,rt2x00pci
mac80211 251806 3 rt2800lib,rt2x00pci,rt2x00lib
cfg80211 151125 2 rt2x00lib,mac80211
eeprom_93cx6 1647 1 rt2800pci
loading rt3090.ko and blacklisting rt2800pci, rt2800lib, rt2x00pci and rt2x00lib renders the system unstable and seems to be a bad idea in general, since there are other modules that seem to depend on those rt2***-modules...

Here somebody uses the packages from RussianFedora and reports, wlan works fine after that: http://forums.fedora-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=479786 Maybe I'm going to try this myself tomorrow.

Re: Ralink rt3090sta WLAN card issue (F16)

I downloaded the source-rpm from http://koji.russianfedora.ru/koji/buildinfo?buildID=750 and built it, but it won't install due to a dependency on "rt3090-kmod-common". So what I need is a package called "rt3090" (this one would provide rt3090-kmod-common). This one _might_ work: http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/russi...c15.noarch.rpm (it's for Fedora 15, but it doesn't seem to provide critical files...).

Unfortunately, I can't try this myself now, because my friend's laptop can't connect to the internet at the moment (guess why....) and he's pretty far away.

Would be great if somebody with rt3090 could test this, so I know whether it would be worthwhile to tell my friend to download it over someone else's computer.

By the way: I posted here, because his problem might be similar to this one here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754481
