Telnet to SMTP from remote not working

I have a sendmail daemon running on Linux, I can telnet @ port 25 from local shell, however if I telnet from a remote system @ port 25, it doesn't work. There is no firewall in between. Kindly advice.

Also, from local command shell, I can not telnet using its own IP address.
Example, my linux IP is 10.0.0.1.
From local console I can telnet as telnet localhost 25
but telnet 10.0.0.1 25 fails.

Any expert advice?

I could bet that the SMTP server is only listening for local connections at 127.0.0.1:25

telnet is also deprecated and no longer used
use "ssh" instead
