Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
Hi All,
Have just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..
Would sure appreciate any ideas on how to fix it.. (Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..
Thanks in advance..

when you say 'installed the nvidia driver (I think)'...what do you mean exactly?

Thank you for responding:

I see nvidia and glx mentioned (quite a bit) in Xorg.0.log..and have followed guides to use akmods and to make sure Nouveau is blacklisted....So, I assumed that the nvidia driver is working..
Yet, I do see a rather ominous line in the boot.log that says:
Quote:
|
.. Starting LSB: Builds and install new kmods from akmod packages failed, see 'systemctl status akmods.service' for details..

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
I have no shame.. I'll try one more time... After reading some other threads, I've come to believe that it's not just me.. Have used preupgrade since F11 (IIRC) ..This last time (14 --> 15) I thought I'd try the "upgrade an existing system" function, from the DVD I made (checksum matched and it passed the "media" test).. Then I followed Leigh's guide ( http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=204752), as I've done before, to install the nvidia driver,(for GeForce 7300) (I use akmod for kernel 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.i686.PAE).. And rebooted... I boot into "run level 3" (if it's still called that).. Now when I go to startx the gnome shell desktop comes up all pretty like.. But, mouse clicks and keyboard commands simply do nothing.. (I can click on "applications" in the upper left corner....but nothing happens.. I can move the mouse pointer all over the screen.... but, can not get anything to open up.. (I can get out to the CLI by: ctrl + alt + f2...) Would like to save this if I can, but will do a clean install if I must... Will post anything that anybody thinks would help.. Anybody have any ideas?
Thank you for your time..

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
Hello,
I don't know if it helps you, but with ATI card I also have in boot log "Starting LSB: Builds and install new kmods from akmod packages ^[[1;31mfailed^[[0m, see 'systemctl status akmods.service' for details." and no problems with mouse or keyboard.
Have you tried to remove nvidia driver and check if mouse works?

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
I have the same problem. I preupgraded from F14 to F15 over the weekend all all seemed to go well. Now Gnome freezes whenever I try to open an application. I can alt+f(n) into a virtual terminal and the system is still responsive, but alt+f1 brings back a frozen Gnome. If I fall back to an F14 kernel I have no problems, but 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.i686.PAE freezes Gnome.
My system:
Asus A7M266-D w/ 2 MP CPUs
ATI Rage 9800 Pro video
2 Gb RAM

I have the same problem.
It pretty much makes Fedora 15 useless.

Yes, it is mentioned on my bug report.
xorg v1.10 included some inner changes that mad nvidia drivers fail in some cases, and *maybe* it's the same for other propietary drivers.
Bet regards,
Iñigo

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
Don't know if this helps others but I had the same problem -- Gnome was non-responsive to mouse clicks. I then typed ctrl + alt + f2 to enter into init 3 shell. At the login prompt II logged in as root and then used yum to remove kmod-nvidia and nvidia*, then rebooted system:
yum remove kmod-nvidia
yum remove nvidia*
reboot
And now Gnome 3 responds to my mouse.

I supose that after you remove nvidia driver your computer use nouveau driver.
But it does not support 3D acceleration with my graphic card.

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
Just an update: (see posts #1 , 4 and 5)
Using the 173xx kmod, I was able to get Gnome-Shell to work; but surely don't think it is working correctly..There is no doubt that the nvidia driver is being used; but (unless I am totally addled) I can't figure out how to navigate in the Gnome-Shell..(I had tried it before in Fc 14, didn't much like it then, but at least it seemed to work). Now, I go to Applications-->System Tools-->Terminal (and terminal opens) ..But, I'm darned if I can figure out how to type in a command... I can type something (and press <enter>, but I don't see it...I have to move the mouse up to "Terminal" in the top panel, and then the command gets ran, and I can see the results in the terminal.... Is this how this is supposed to work?.. Anyway, to make a long story short: I went to "System Settings-->System Info-->Graphics" and set it up to boot into "Forced Fallback Mode"... That seems to work fairly well... Guess I'll try to customize that a bit; and wait for the next Kernel update...

Re: Gnome 3 desktop does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard.
Having same issue but with F15 live USB booting. This is the first time I have ran the new desktop look and thought I was doing something wrong. But It loads to the desktop and then the keyboard and mouse dont work.

Normally I run F13 and things run fine. But F15 is borked I guess.
Im really not into the new look so I really dont care. I was just trying out the USB memstick boot option. But I did want to chime in and confirm that others are having a problem.
