Question Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

It seems like all mplayer rpm builds have stopped being updated. The latest in rpmfusion is about a year old. I've tried to find other places for newer rpm builds but there is nothing out there.

I need a new mplayer, because the current one does not support subtitles in bluray movies, the SVN builds have had this feature for many months.

Anyone knows what is going on? Is there a particular reason why nobody updates rpm builds for mplayer for such a long time?

Thank you.

You didn't try that hard

http://packages.atrpms.net/dist/f14/mplayer/

Code:
[leigh@localhost ~]$ rpm -q mplayer
mplayer-1.0-80_snap20110221.el6.x86_64
[leigh@localhost ~]$ yum list mplayer
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, remove-with-leaves
Installed Packages
mplayer.x86_64 4:1.0-80_snap20110221.el6 @atrpms
[leigh@localhost ~]$

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

Have you been using the atrpms build with rpmfusion enabled with no ill effects ?
mplayer has loads of dependencies

I don't know as I'm using EL6 (there is no rpmfusion support for EL6).

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

ah interesting, because I've looked at all others (rpmfusion, custom repos, etc) and nobody had a recent mplayer/mencoder.

I'll try atrpms, and hopefully I will not have dependency problems :P

Thank you!

VDPAU is just amazing!!!!

There is always the "compile it yourself" approach, it's what I do.

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

I think we are through the stone-age stuff of compiling stuff on our own

I have better things to do with my life than to compile stuff that should have already been compiled.

I told myself to "get a life" a long time ago... around after I finished university.

Sounds like you should stick to Microsoft products then.

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

I tend to agree with vallimar here.

The great thing about linux is that you can get the source code to most of the applications you use, and if necessary, you can make changes to them and compile from the source.

I don't see how that classifies as being "stone-age" stuff. In my book, that makes it much more modern and up to date than just being able to grab a precompiled binary that fit's someone else's needs and just hope it runs on your system.

The way I look at it. If you think you a too good to compile a package, then don't complain that nobody else does it, either.

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

I just built mplayer on F14 today and only ran into a few dependencies: ffmpeg and yasm. the mplayer configure file has a built in git to get the latest ffmpeg and yasm was just a quick yum install. All the required libraries appear to be statically linked into mplayer, including the new ffmpeg, so it it is pretty self sufficient. I can run it directly out of the download-build directory without any library conflicts and no need to install it into a bin directory which might muck up my standard F14 installation.

Re: Latest MPLAYER rpm builds

If you compile it yourself, you can configure it for your needs, rather than what the package maintainer thinks the majority of users need, (or want). Sometimes they configure it to not have support for some feature or the other, perhaps because of dependency issues, or because it requires the latest hardware. I'm not suggesting that this is the case with mplayer and your situation, but I don't think you can so easily dismiss source.
