Is It Safe Now?

sorry guys,before you bash me try to understand me:
I am an Ubuntu fan and user,I've been using Ubuntu for years BUT recently I've been looking for an alternative to all the Global Menus that Ubuntu is introducing SO I decided to try Fedora and after three installations of F15 with all the crap in the updates I am reconsidering my choice.
I am currently installing the Nightly Build 20110301107 and will give it a try.I am not a quitter but really with all this crap after running Software Updates I am getting sick of Fedora.
Developers of Fedora should get an update right away to fix this login crap.I am a new to Fedora,perhaps I need the help of an experience friend to guide me on how to fix it if it happens again but all the threads that talk about this topic are confusing.I need an step by step to fix this problem should it occur again and I mean steps from pressing the power button ON through booting BUT like my topic says;Is it safe to run a software update after I finish this last installation? Thanks again,Peace Out

Not even nearly accurate!
Actually kubuntu alpha 3 didn't boot up, but that's the only one I've heard of.

i agree with leigh, i downloaded Alpha3 of Ubuntu11.04 and didnt boot . i have seen many other people have posting the same issues in the Ubuntu forum about it.

btw, what makes you think going to Ubuntu you'll get " better " flash support there than you would of any other distro?

Re: Is It Safe Now?

You're really running the wrong version if you want a stable, fully working OS. If you install and run an alpha/nightly/unstable version of any OS, expect bugs. That's its whole purpose for existing, to find and fix what is broken.

If you want a nice experience where everything works, download Fedora 14. If you want to play with new features and find instabilities and bugs, run the pre-releases.

No offence, but disparaging any piece of software because the pre-release versions are buggy means you completely misunderstand the development cycle.

Re: Is It Safe Now?

right Isaac
I fully understand what pre-releases are and certainly that is what I tend to do,try new software,rather that going back to old ones,I already have an stable OS that is the Alpha 3 Ubuntu,very stable but read my first post clearly,I want to walk away from Global Menus so I want to test the new Fedora 15 with the Gnome 3,very nice I LIKE IT but the fact that we have this login bug it's way beyond my imagination why it has been fixed already after few days,the alpha releases on Ubu never got this bad.
Listen Up! I want to go the Fedora 15 Way. I am not Bashing Fedora 15 but it hurst when you go this far installing and have all set up the way you want it and after a simple Update it all goes to hell,that is why I asked for a holding hand walk throu in fixing this crap.I am not comparing the two Distros and that i's not my intention,I JUST WANT TO LOG IN....

For goodness sake! It is an Alpha version after all. What do you expect?

If you don't like the global menu remove it, it's really simple, just right click on it and select remove from panel.

Re: Is It Safe Now?

Not sure if anyone got around to answering this but I think what you are looking for is under /etc/gdm it is the custom.conf file set it to something like this in the greeter section although I think the bug is fixed now:

[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=false
#AutomaticLogin=

[security]

[xdmcp]

[greeter]
#IncludeAll=true
Include=your_login_name

[chooser]

[debug]

This bugged me forever in Fedora 14 but since I found that online it has been a treat. Now if I can get the desktop to look like a desktop instead of a cellphone Fedora 15 will be nice.

Re: Is It Safe Now?

I think the version you want is Fedora 14.

Fedora 15 is/has been very unstable.

You can count F15 as pre alpha, F14 as beta (there are still issues showing up).

The entire Fedora line goes end of life about where others reach production.

Stick around. Install Fedora 14. You'll learn a lot about Linux here.
