Question Error in image viewing

I've recently installed fedora 12 64bit on my laptop. There have been a few bugs and gripes but the main one now is image viewing.
I took some photos earlier and inserted my 8Gb SDHC card into my hp's card reader. the card is registered and i can see thumbnails fine. But when i try to open the file in either GIMP or Ristretto the file would almost look corrupt. cut the image horizontally into 3 (sometimes more) pieces, modify the hue of one piece... move another piece to the right (then the right half of that slice is now cycled to the left of the slice) hope that make sense
some of those actions can be combined. sometimes part of the image is just grey.
However, i have opened the files successfully on my 32-bit computer...

ideas please

Did you try copying these to your HD first? Ive had some issues with images but think I fixed mine.

it was reading directly off the card. I shelled into my 32bit system (which was opening the card fine) and opened the sd card from there fine... I then transferred the card to the computer that didn't read them before and it worked... but now i don't know if i'm having card troubles or computer troubles
