Try booting with kernel parameter nomodeset, see if that helps... .

Can you get into a VT or boot to run-level 3, or somehow upload a copy of the Xorg log from the failed X-session ?
/var/log/Xorg.0.log[.old]
Attach (do NOT post) to a post (or upload to fpaste.org or similar file-sharing site).

I don't see any real problems there (which does not mean that there aren't any, just that I don't see any), so I can only guess at a possible problem between the desktop environment and the video driver (which I have seen before), and suggest a bug report.

Segmentation fault at address (nil)
Obviously a fatal error.
Try a full OS software update yet (yes: only one day after release, there may be an update to Xorg server that fixes...). If not: you need to file a bug report (or else suffer and wait).

Umm... but he's got a Riva TNT2 chipset (which is unsupported by NVidia), and is not attempting the proprietary NVidia driver, just trying to log into a desktop with default "nouveau". Or did I miss something ?

I believe that the nomodset option is still required.
