Xserver help (I think)

I've got a Fedora Core2 box that I would like to run a gui from my w2k workstation. I've only telneted or ssh'ed to the box but I would like to run a gui interface.

Can someone point me in a direction to a url or provide me with what need to do in order to get this working?

Thanks

pigpen, before I try x-manager I'd like to use the Xcygwin.

I've set up the Xcygwin (I think). I mean I can get a command prompt and type 'startx' or 'xwin' and get some sort of response.

at the startx prompt I get a gui command prompt. No big deal.

when I type xwin I get what looks to be an old linux desktop with nothing. Almost like a snow screen. do I need to do something on the liunx box first?

Thanks

What about using VNC for this? The packages are on the FC2 CDs, or can be installed via YUM or APT if you did not install it the first time. You can download the free client for windows, and connect to the Fedora Box in a GUI.

If you're going to use X11, make sure you enable it. System Settings -> Login Screen -> XDMCP -> enable XDMCP. Also make sure that if you're running a firewall you let those ports through - if I remember correctly, it's UDP 177 and then TCP 60xx, where xx is the window number you choose (ie. open up ports UDP:177 and TCP:6000 through 6040).

taylor65 thanks, I've got another test box that is right next to me and I used your recommended settings. From the cygwin command line (w2k box) what do I do now to get it to connect with the same gui interace I have on the box.

I can connect cygwin using ssh but I'd like to be able to get the gui.

Thanks

what do you mean with "gui"? if you want kde or something then you'll have to
work with XDMCP (with which i don't have enough experience). if you just want
to get X applications on your windows box, start the cygwin X server, ssh
(via putty or cygwin - doesn't matter, just be sure to enable X11 forwarding)
into your linux box and start any X application (e.g. xeyes).
