Steam games crash when launching

I've scoured the internet for an answer and haven't found an answer at all. Basically when I try and launch any game in Steam, I get this:

Code:
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered

I have tried FC9, 10 and 11 (both x86 and x64 versions) and it happens on all of them. I have the proper drivers installed for my video card (nexuiz and other OpenGL games work at full speed), Steam games just won't work.

What puzzles me is that in both OpenSuSE and Kubuntu, Steam runs fine, and so do the games, but I'd rather not have to use either of them because they have more problems than they're worth.

Can anyone help me here?

I blame PulseAudio, run winecfg and tell it to use ALSA.

That doesn't help. The only game I can get to run is HL2 in 640x480 mode, it won't allow me to change the resolution.

The game crashes every time before getting to the main menu. Crash occurs when 2560x1600 resolution is set via the ingame menu whatever Commendable job done by you. Congratulations!!!

I figured out how to fix the problem, but it was a royal pain in the arse to do.

On FC 11 x64, I downloaded the latest source beta of WINE (1.1.26 I think), downloaded all 300 or so 32-bit libraries and dependencies and compiled it. That whole process took about 4 hours. When it spat out a WINE binary, I ran it directly from the source folder to launch Steam and then TF2.

TF2 ran in DX95 mode, though it didn't have any sound. I used the installer in the source folder to install it on the computer properly so I could use winecfg. I got it to use ALSA and relaunched TF2, and it crashed when I joined a game with some archaic "unable to load sound xyz.wav" message. After another half hour of playing around with settings, I launched TF2 in DX81 mode and everything worked, albeit slow.

WINE seems to have some problems with the sound system still, but at least I can play Steam games now. Hammer is another story though, I don't think they'll ever get that to work right.
