Sun Java Plugin Crashes Firefox 1.0PR

I have been running Fedora Core 2 for almost a month now and I finally found some time to install the Java plugin and now whenever I go to a page with Java applet it crashes.

I am using Mozilla Firefox and I have it set up in my user directory. I followed the directions and downloaded the j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586-rpm.bin file and then I unpacked it and moved the libjavaplugin_oji.so file into
the Firefox plugins directory. I also followed the advice of one website and removed the libnullplugin.so from the plugins directory.

The set up is like this: /home/steve/firefox-installer/plugins

I also did some troubleshooting and moved the libnullplugin.so back into the directory with the libjavaplugin_oji.so file and it still crashed. I have been using the latest Firefox browser, 1.0PR, for the past week without any problems until now. Firefox works great with the Flash plugin and I haven't installed any Firefox extensions.

Any and all advice would be helpful. I do some Java programming and it is important that I get it to work in Fedora.

Thanks,

Wild

You don't want to copy the file you need to create a symbolic link to the file. http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/index.html follow the link for plugins. You will see a like to how to install java.

You don't have to move the plugin file into the plugins directory, but make a symlink otherwise, it won't find the path to the Java libraries, not matter how many times you set it in your $PATH or $LD_LIBRARY environment variables (this is a hard coded thing). Just make the symlink

Ooops it appears as if I have to fully read (twice) each reply... I did not see this was already answered :o

No need to symlink anything!!

Just install xorg-x11-deprecated-libs pkg (tha comes in FC3 cds or via apt).

It provides some libs needed by java-firefox plugin.

AFAIK, you do need to symlink the plugin. However, don't copy the file physically over, or it will crash Firefox.

Yes, since the plugin searches for the java runtime environment and stuff in the local directory it is called from, so you just link to it, no matter where you installed it.
