Problem connecting to software source

Hello,
I am new here and apologize for a problem that's probably been beaten to death. I tried to search, but am a bit overwhelmed. I just installed Fedora Core 9 to a system that is a dual boot. With the Linux system, I can get to the internet and our company's intranet. I want to install TCL and Expect packages, but when I try to "add/remove programs" and click on "Programming", I get an error. The error say's
"Problem connecting to a software source Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora...."

Some other forum responses have said to run: "yum -y update" . When I run that, I get essentially the same response with "IOError: <urlopen error....."

I am poking around, but I am a bit overwhelmed. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've seen people reporting this problem lately,but for me everything is working great.
Maybe if you first do;

yum clean all

and then

yum update

will help,or maybe you can try to change the mirrors for downloading software.Maybe just waiting a little would help.

Hi Alan_ri, Thanks for the reply. I am not at that machine at the moment. I will try the "yum clean all" command and see. I've been repeat trying, but no luck so far.

Are you by any chance behind a proxy ?

If so, you will have to configure yum to work with it.
You can search through the forums for various how-to's and other posts or read through some of the official documentation located here.

I looked at the web proxy configuration page and it indicated that I should specify the proxy server details in the /etc/yum.conf file. Mine looks like:

[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1
plugins=1
metadata_expire=1800
installonly_limit=2

# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d

The example looks like:

# The proxy server - proxy serverort number
proxy=http://mycache.mydomain.com:3128
# The account details for yum connections
proxy_username=yum-user
proxy_password=qwerty

I added:

...but the result was still:

Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...ra-9&arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>

I've heard some say that the site is just busy, but this has been going for a couple of days now. I really doubt it's because of a busy server and think that is has to do with this web proxy thing. I am at a loss as I just don't know the mechanics of it all. When I type in

yum update

, does that make yum refer to the "yum.conf" file? It seems that there are a lot of dependencies that are not obvious and I don't have a sequence that I could go through to find out what is not working. Is there a simple way that I could validate that the web proxy that I put into the "yum.conf" file is correct?

I'm getting this now with regard to the Livna repo. I just found your thread. The error message also says "check the error output" (or something like that). Where would that be? (In the future, if they could put the path on the error messages themselves that would be helpful).

It looks like livna may be down. I can't load rpm.livna.org in my browser.
